Board Members
Welcome to the Girl Scouts of Silver Sage Council web site!  I’m in my third year as board chair, and I’ve been spending some time reflecting on what Girl Scouting can do for girls; and what I can do for Girl Scouting.  Those thoughts led to a theme for what this organization has to offer  - Voices for Girls.

I am always astonished to remember that less than 100 years ago, women were not allowed to vote.  A lot has happened for women in this country in a relatively short period time – thanks to the voices of a legion of brave people who recognized a ridiculous situation when they saw it.  Certainly, we’ve come a long way – and just as certainly, we have a long way to go.

What woman among us hasn’t, at some point in her life, experienced the “you’re just a girl” syndrome?  The words we heard as children on the playground were often undisguised; and although the words we encounter as adults are usually more subtle, the urge to assign females a place in the world and keep them there is a strong one; and it will take more voices over many generations to completely disappear.

That’s where you, I, and the girl-centered organization of Girl Scouting come in. We are the ones who accept the responsibility, carry the torch, and never give up in our hopes for our daughters.

The only way to begin to understand the blessings we all have is to take a few minutes every week to walk in the shoes of another.  Then we understand the true meaning of service and working together to better the world, and the important role we each play.  You don’t have to go far to hear some tough statistics and some sad stories.  It is right and necessary that we all understand what girls face today in their schools, their friendships, their neighborhoods and their homes.  On the other hand, it is also right and necessary that you remember to celebrate the fact that there are many people who care, who believe they can help, and who work hard to make the world a better place – and when you became a Girl Scout, you put yourself among them…and become a voice for girls.

Sincerely,
