Youth development experts tell us that girls want and value leadership opportunities where they can learn by doing and that involve cooperation with others. This more inclusive and empowering model of shared leadership encourages girls to take an increased responsibility for designing and implementing activities, resulting in opportunities for them to see how their actions can impact the lives of others.
Within the framework of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, we endeavor to apply the following concepts in our partnership with girls to strengthen their leadership development:
Girl-Led: Girls play an active part in figuring out the what, where, when, how, and why of their activities.
Learning By Doing: Girls engage in continuous cycles of action and reflection that result in deeper understanding of concepts and mastery of practical skills.
Cooperative Learning: Girls work together toward shared goals in an atmosphere of respect and collaboration that encourages the sharing of skills, knowledge, and learning.
One of the core components of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience are the leadership Journeys – coordinated series of activities grouped around general themes, such as community service, earth science, and self-expression.
All Journeys invite girls to explore a specific leadership theme in ways appropriate to their developmental stage. They are designed to encourage development of the three leadership keys, to guide leaders in promoting the partnership processes, and are each tied to specific leadership benefits. By doing the journeys, we are effortlessly delivering the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
With a focus on activities that promote Discover, Connect, and Take Action development, in a learning environment that is Girl-Led, Cooperative, emphasizes Experiential Learning and Reflection, we are on track to achieving specific and measurable short-term and intermediate benefits, or “outcomes.”
These outcomes, over time, lead us to the accomplishment of our long-term outcome, our Girl Scout Mission, which is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.
