The Volunteer Essentials Handbook is the primary reference document for Troop Leaders. Upon completion of the volunteer application process, every leader and co-leader receives a copy of the Volunteer Essentials Handbook (along with other getting-started materials). Study of the Volunteer Essentials Handbook and completion of the quiz are one of the basic training requirements for new leaders. For more information about the training requirements, visit the Training page and review Course #201.
NEW - The Updated 2011-2012 Volunteer Essentials Handbook is Here!
The Volunteer Essentials Handbook (VEH) for 2011-2012 has been reorganized into smaller chapters for increased ease-of-use, and now contains some great information to complete the transition to the GSLE, Journeys, and the Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting.
NOTE: Except for some updated program information that you might choose to print, you are not required to print a new copy of VEH. The content of the 2010-2011 version is still valid. If you have a 2009 version that does not include the Safety-Wise chapter, we recommend that you update to the newest copy of VEH. (And, don't forget, printing resource materials are a legitimate use of Troop and SU funds.)
Click here for an overview of the updates and click on the chapters below to view and/or print.
The 2010-2011 Volunteer Essentials Handbook has four chapters:
- Chapter 1: Program & The Girl-Adult Partnership -- Reviews the basics of what girls do in Girl Scouts (Program) and the role of the adult leader.
- Chapter 2: Troop & Money Management -- Reviews the nuts & bolts of organizing and managing a troop.
- Chapter 3: Safety-Wise -- Reviews the basics of safety of Girl Scouting.
- Chapter 4: Forms -- Includes the commonly used forms.
